CAF Champions League: Kenya Police bomb Mogadishu City for perfect debut
Kenya Police started their CAF Champions League journey in style after defeating Somalia’s Mogadishu City 3-1 at Nyayo Stadium on Saturday.
The Kenyan champions, who are making their first appearance in the competition, took full advantage of playing in front of their home fans.
Somalia does not have a CAF-approved stadium, forcing Mogadishu City to host their “home” match in Nairobi.
Eric Zakayo opened the scoring in the 15th minute, giving Police a slim 1-0 lead at halftime. Mogadishu City, however, refused to give in easily. Issa Marsis equalized in the 50th minute, stunning the Law Enforcers and briefly giving the Somali champions hope of an upset.
The response from Police was quick. Just seven minutes later, Edward Omondi struck to restore the lead, putting the hosts back in control at 2-1.
The pressure continued, and in the 70th minute, Daniel Simiyu sealed the victory with a well-taken finish, ensuring Police carried a two-goal cushion into the return leg.
The 3-1 win leaves Police in a strong position ahead of the second leg set for next Sunday. A draw or even a narrow defeat would still see them through to the next round.
If they advance, Kenya Police will face the winner between Sudan’s Al Hilal and South Sudan’s Jamus, a clash that promises to test their continental credentials further.
It was a dream debut for the Kenyan champions, who showed both attacking quality and resilience when tested, raising hopes of a deep run in this season’s tournament.
