KCB, Leos and defending champions Kabras make Dala Sevens quarterfinals
KCB Rugby, Strathmore University Leos, and defending champions Kabras Sugar stormed into the quarterfinals of the 2025 Dala Sevens after strong performances in Kisumu on Saturday.
The three sides, all title contenders, underlined their class with convincing group stage victories that lit up the Kisumu Polytechnic grounds.
KCB, who are chasing a fifth National Sevens Circuit title, were in ruthless form in Group C. The bankers opened their campaign with a 36-12 win over Homeboyz before schooling Embu RFC 36-0.
Their biggest statement came in the evening clash against arch-rivals Mwamba, where they cruised to a 33-5 win to finish unbeaten.
With 104 points at the top of the circuit standings, KCB now need only 15 more points to officially secure the overall crown — a target within reach if they advance to the semifinals.
Strathmore Leos also had a perfect outing in Group D. The university students, who sit second in the overall standings, blanked Impala RFC 29-0 in their opening match before thrashing hosts Kisumu RFC 36-0.
Their slick attacking play and solid defense earned them a quarterfinal ticket alongside Menengai Oilers, who were equally unstoppable. The Oilers hammered Kisumu 50-0 and Impala 48-0 to dominate the pool with a superior points tally.
Defending champions Kabras Sugar faced tougher opposition in Group A but showed their trademark resilience. After brushing aside MMUST 34-15 in their opening match, the sugar men had to dig deep against Nakuru RFC before clinching a narrow 21-14 win.
They sealed their pool with another hard-fought 19-14 victory over Catholic Monks, ensuring they remain on course to defend the title they won last year in Kisumu.
Daystar Falcons were the surprise package of Group B. The students stunned Kenya Harlequin 20-14 in their opener before outclassing Nondescripts 31-12. They wrapped up their day in style with a 41-0 rout of MSC Rugby, finishing top of the group with three wins from three.
Other teams also had mixed fortunes. Catholic Monks shocked Nakuru 14-10 in the early kickoff before losing to MMUST 17-12, while Nakuru bounced back to edge MMUST 24-19 later in the day.
In Group B, Kenya Harlequin redeemed themselves with a 29-14 win over MSC after an opening stumble, but it wasn’t enough to keep pace with Daystar.
Mwamba RFC also impressed in Group C, thumping Embu 40-0 and Homeboyz 24-5 to book their slot in the last eight despite the loss to KCB.
Meanwhile, Kisumu RFC finally gave their home fans something to cheer when they edged Impala RFC 15-12 in their final group match after heavy defeats earlier in the day.
With the big guns — KCB, Strathmore Leos, Kabras Sugar, Menengai Oilers, and Daystar Falcons — all safely in the quarterfinals, Sunday promises fireworks as the battle for the Dala Sevens crown intensifies.
