KCB crowned 2025 SportPesa National Sevens Circuit champions in Kisumu
KCB RFC are the new kings of Kenya’s sevens rugby after lifting the 2025 SportPesa National Sevens Circuit title in Kisumu on Sunday. The Bankers capped off a superb season by winning the Dala 7s, played at the Mamboleo Showground, and sealing their fifth overall crown.
The turning point came in the quarterfinals, where KCB faced Strathmore Leos in a clash that doubled up as the championship decider. It was a tense affair, with both sides exchanging tries, but George Ooro’s late score gave KCB a narrow 15-14 win that confirmed them as circuit champions.
With the pressure off, the Bankers pushed on in style. They overcame Daystar Falcons in the semifinals before setting up a final against fierce rivals Kabras Sugar.
In the decider, KCB drew first blood through Samuel Asati, with Stephen Osumba adding the extras. Kabras responded with a try, but Floyd Wabwire made sure the trophy was heading to the Bankers’ cabinet with a late try, sealing a 12-5 victory.
The triumph in Kisumu was KCB’s fourth cup win in the six-leg series, having earlier dominated at the Driftwood 7s, Christie 7s, and Kababeri 7s. They also reached the finals in Embu and Nakuru but fell short against Strathmore on those occasions. This consistency saw them finish top of the overall standings.
Speaking after the victory, KCB’s interim coach Andrew Amonde praised his squad for showing resilience throughout the campaign.
“This title belongs to the players. They showed hunger, teamwork, and great discipline. It has been a long season, and to finish on top in sevens after a tough run in fifteens rugby is very rewarding,” said Amonde.
There was also personal glory for Kenya international Vincent Onyala, who was voted the circuit’s Most Valuable Player. His pace, vision, and leadership proved crucial in guiding KCB to the title.
The win in Kisumu cemented KCB’s place as one of Kenya’s rugby powerhouses, and their fans celebrated loudly at the Mamboleo Showground. With four cup wins, one MVP award, and the overall crown, the Bankers walked away as the undisputed champions of the 2025 SportPesa Sevens season.
