League champions Kenya Pipeline players have reason to smile as they receive Sh2 million

Kenya Volleyball Federation women league champions Kenya Pipeline have more reason to smile after their parent company awarded them Sh2 million as a reward for winning the league title.

The team was awarded the money on Thursday June 19 by the Kenya Pipeline Company Managing Director Joe Sang who assured the team of the company’s support.

“We’ll continue supporting the team and I can assure you that with a lot of hard work and support from the company we should be able to see this team again retain the trophy, but more importantly, we want to win the Africa Championship trophy,’’ Sang said.

Pipeline won the league title after beating Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) 2-0 during a best of three league finals play-offs at Kasarani earlier this month.

The Oil Merchants had reached the final after beating the reigning league champions KCB Bank during the semi-finals playoffs which were played at the Makande Gymnasium in Mombasa County in May while DCI had beaten former champions Kenya Prisons.

Sang encouraged the team to fight with the same zeal and strive to win more trophies.

He said the company will roll out a financial literacy program to educate the players on matters of saving money, which will be a basis of their success in life.

“We are immensely proud of the KPC Volleyball Club for their extraordinary achievement. Their resilience and determination on and off the field is truly inspiring and in that regard, we shall give them an additional Sh1 million award as a token of our appreciation for their hard work and a commitment to supporting their continued success,” said Faith Boinett, Board Chairperson of Kenya Pipeline Company.

“This victory is not just about winning a league, it’s about breaking barriers and setting a powerful example for young women across Kenya, and we look forward to seeing them soar to even greater heights,” she added.”

Coach Geoffrey Omondi said the team will not rest on their laurels as they were working hard to become even better and do well in future assignments.

“We got the best support from the company, and we intend to do better in the coming season. We will ensure that the trophies that we failed to win will be brought home in the new season,” Omondi said.

Apart from winning the league title, Pipeline also won a number of individual awards.

Daisy Letting was named Most Valuable Player, Emmaculate Nekesa was recognised as the Best Setter while captain Gladys Ekaru was voted Best Middle Blocker with Loice Simiyu bagging the Best Opposite hitter award.

The team also celebrated players who got selected to the national team, Malkia Strikers; Emmaculate Nyongesa, Celestine Nyongesa, Loice Simiyu, Gladys Ekaru, Lydia Emokol, Elizabeth Sokoiyo, Mariam Musa and Daisy Leting.
