Barcelona go top in LaLiga after win over Real Vallecano
A Robert Lewandowski goal was all Barcelona needed to go to the top of the LaLiga standings on Monday night after a hard fought 1-0 win over Rayo Vallecano.
Lewandowski scored from the spot for his 20th LaLiga goal of the season after Vallecano midfielder Pathe Ciss brought down Barcelona defender Ingo Martinez in the box.
It was a silly challenge from the Senegal international as the penalty proved to be the decider among the two sides.
Barcelona started the match in third place with Madrid rivals Real and Atletico above the Catalans in the table.
The win on Monday took Barcelona top of the table on goal difference as they have the same number of points with LaLiga champions Real Madrid.
The two Spanish rivals are both on 51 points but Barcelona have a superior goal difference of +40 compared to Real Madrid’s +29.
Barcelona have been the high scoring team in LaLiga having scored 65 goals so far after 24 matches. Real Madrid have scored 52 goals while Atletico who are in third place with 50 points have scored 39 goals.
Both Real and Atletico were only able to draw their matches on Sunday which gave Barcelona the chance to in a go top.
